India will pilot battery storage at coal-fired power plants to soak up surging midday solar and keep thermal capacity ready for the evening peak—without destabilizing the grid. Intent on reaching an ambitious goal of 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, rooftop solar and off-grid solar deployment has begun to ramp up across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. But Chhattisgarh is making strides towards cleaner energy, with the Climate Investment Funds and the World Bank financing India’s largest solar battery project in Rajnandgaon. The power plant was inaugurated in February 2024 by Prime Minister Modi and is now up and running.
