The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) explicitly targets “universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services” by 2030, but more than 730 million people still lacked access to electricity in 2020, with around 50% of these people living in fragile and conflict-affected. Mini-grids (MGs) have emerged as a cost-effective solution for electrifying remote communities characterized by low population density and challenging geographical conditions. However, identifying optimal locations for sustainable MG deployment is complex due to technical, social, and economic. Ethiopia’s telecommunications liberalisation, launched with the promise of transforming the nation’s digital economy, is facing significant setbacks, a World Bank report warns. Mini-grids, sometimes called micro-grids or island grids, are locally delineated and self-contained power grids that supply electricity to multiple homes.
